Weekend – new gay film has heaps of praise
After an extended tour of international film festivals, Andrew Haigh’s pitch-perfect gay love story comes home to Britain festooned with praise and weighed down with acting awards for newcomers Tom Cullen and Chris New, reports the UK’s Metro paper.
Cullen plays half-out lifeguard Russell, who hooks up with confident artist Glen on Friday night, only to discover that he is off to the US for good on Sunday evening. That gives them just one weekend to fall in love…
This tiny two-hander with the merest rumour of plot may well be a landmark film in the depiction of out and outspoken gay characters. Material that is more often the stuff of lurid tabloid headlines – casual sex and class-A drug use – becomes the basis for a beautiful, bittersweet romance that is as perceptive as it is provocative.
Blessed with a bracing sense of the here and now, and graced by wonderful performances, this lovely Weekend is a great way to spend part of yours.
