Podgorica. Organisers cancelled Montenegro’s first gay pride parade on Tuesday, blaming a lack of support from the government of the deeply conservative Balkan nation, AFP reports.
The parade was due to have taken place on May 31 in the capital Podgorica but activists say that they have decided to postpone it indefinitely as authorities had demonstrated no real commitment to the event.
"The parade will only go ahead when the government is prepared to give us genuine support, not just declarations of support," Aleksandar Zekovich of the organising committee told a press conference. Zekovich in particular criticised the government over its failure to take up a request to appoint a representative to the organising committee.
